Addu Development Plan2026–2031
Back to the goals

Goal 1 of 12

Ensure energy security

Every home a renewable energy producer

Addu generates 68,431,692 kWh of electricity annually to serve 7,389 connections, comprising 5,693 domestic, 1,455 business, and 241 institutional customers. The city's heavy reliance on imported diesel to meet this demand leaves households, businesses, and public services vulnerable to rising fuel costs, global market volatility, and supply disruptions. Frequent power outages caused by generation and network capacity constraints further underline the urgent need for a more reliable, resilient, and diversified energy system. With its abundant solar resources, Addu has exceptional potential to become a renewable-energy prosumer city, where households, businesses, and institutions generate, store, consume, and share clean electricity. The widespread adoption of solar PV and battery storage offers a practical and scalable pathway towards achieving this transition.

Targets

  1. Target 1.1

Transform 85% of homes to renewable energy producers by 2028.

  2. Target 1.2

Enable 75% of businesses to install rooftop solar PV and participate in virtual power plants by 2028.

  3. Target 1.3

Equip 100% of government buildings with rooftop solar PV and battery storage, integrating them into Addu's virtual power plant network by 2028.
